Joel Nagel Announces Major Wildlife Conservation Donation in Belize

  • Post category:Events

In late 2022, Joel Nagel orchestrated a substantial contribution to wildlife conservation efforts in Belize. Facilitated through Caye International Bank, a combined total of BZ$1 million was presented to two of the country’s most worthwhile organizations: the Belize Zoo and Belize Karst Habitat Conservation. This philanthropic gesture underlines a deep commitment to preserving Belize’s rich biodiversity, home to an array of unique species, from the Scarlet Macaw to the Jaguar.

Supporting the Belize Zoo Amidst Challenges

Since it was established in 1983 by Sharon Matola, the zoo has been a sanctuary for animals, which have been orphaned, rescued, or are in need of care, with a mission to provide education on the nation’s wildlife to both Belizeans and visitors alike.

The donation was able to provide significant relief to the zoo. Prior, the organization had experienced some difficult times financially following the pandemic, which had impacted daily operations and maintenance of animal habitats. Celso Poot, Director of the Belize Zoo, expressed gratitude, noting that the funds would help in maintaining the zoo’s infrastructure and supporting its ongoing conservation projects. “The tropical environment is very hard on infrastructure, and not being able to undertake the necessary maintenance work needed over the past 2.5 years means that there’s a lot to do,” Poot explained.

Bolstering Belize Karst Habitat Conservation’s Efforts

Initially deemed a ‘paper park’ with no active management, the area fell prey to rampant illegal logging and hunting. The organization, founded by Aaron Juan, has been pivotal in turning around the reserve’s fate. The funding will help build crucial infrastructure, such as a ranger station, and facilitate essential conservation activities, including reforestation and community engagement programs.

Caye International Bank’s Continued Commitment

Joel Nagel, Chairman of Caye Bank, has been instrumental in identifying and supporting philanthropic projects that enhance Belize’s ecological and economic landscape. “Belize has such incredible biodiversity in its reefs and jungles, and I want to play a role in protecting them for our children, grandchildren, and their grandchildren,” Nagel stated, reflecting on the importance of such initiatives. Michael Cobb, Director of Caye Bank, also expressed enthusiasm about the impact of these contributions, highlighting the joy of helping to fortify Belize’s natural resources.

This generous donation not only underscores the ongoing commitment of Joel Nagel and Caye International Bank to conservation but also sets a significant benchmark for corporate involvement in environmental stewardship in Belize. As these funds begin to catalyze various projects, both organizations anticipate a marked improvement in ecological preservation and public awareness, ensuring that Belize’s natural heritage thrives for generations.
