The fundraising campaign for the Living Word Church (LWC) toy drive surpassed all expectations this year by raising BZD 43,500, exceeding the ambitious 35,000-dollar target. Church officials said that Attorney Joel Nagel, who serves as the chairman of the LWC board, played a pivotal role in the fundraising campaign’s success, challenging several prominent firms in Belize to meet that high target number.
Thanks to the successful fundraising effort, the LWC was able to give toys to 1,500 underprivileged children at the church’s Christmas Family Outreach event, which was held in San Pedro, Belize, on December 23, 2019. As part of the event, every needy family received a festive package containing a toy and a holiday food basket. Joel Nagel, who has spearheaded the toy drive since its inception nine years ago, said he was particularly pleased by the success of the fundraising efforts this year, which allowed for a significantly larger number of toys to be bought relative to previous toy drives—400 more than last year. “It’s so gratifying this time of year to be able to help children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to enjoy Christmas as they should,” said with a smile attorney Nagel, who long ago became a naturalized citizen of Belize.
LWC routinely assists disadvantaged members of the community in Belize all year round, providing needy families with food and schoolchildren with basic school supplies. But the Christmas toy drive is one of the happiest moments of the year for LWC board members, such as Chairman Nagel and LWC Pastor Ian Zaldivar, who oversaw the distribution of presents to the children this year once again.
Some of the more prominent donor firms who made the toy drive such a major success this year included Nagel & Associates, Georgetown Trust, ECI Development, Escape Artist, and Caye International Bank.
